BUCKINGHAM TOWN (3) v HANWELL TOWN (2)
FA CUP SPONSORED BY E-ON-PRELIMINARY ROUND REPLAY
WEDNESDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER 2006
For the third season in succession, we were knocked out of the FA Cup at the Preliminary Round stage after a replay. Firstly it was East Thurrock United, then  Flackwell Heath and now Buckingham Town after a hard fought game that could have gone either way. With neither Warren Clarke or Jason O'Connor available after the injuries they had suffered on Saturday, Antony Rowlands and Gary Brown made their first appearances of the season whilst Lee McManus made his first start replacing Charlie Baverstock who dropped to the bench. We opened the game brightly but fell behind after just twelve minutes.Gary was penalised after winning the ball in a fair challenge and from the resultant free kick, the Buckingham player/manager Tony Joyce lifted a high ball into our penalty area. Simon misjudged the flight of the ball as he came to collect it and the ball struck Richard Smith and rebounded into our empty net .We fought back strongly and almost equalised when Chris Mills set Lee free down the left and from Lee's cross, Keith headed the ball against the underside of the crossbar and then headed the rebound over with Reece Kirk in the Buckingham goal stranded. Two minutes later we were level when Jason Tucker lifted the ball over the Buckingham back line as they tried to clear from a corner and Keith crossed the ball into the goalmouth where Dean Harper scored from close range. From another corner by Chris, Gary's back header hit the top of the bar before going behind but in the last few minutes of the half, Buckingham should have gone ahead. Simon made a great save to deny Smith and then Anthony gave the ball away to Ruben Max-Grant who was left with a clear run to goal but he shot wide of the far post as Simon advanced. Max-Grant then missed two other good opportunities before the half time whistle.
We took the lead eight minutes into the half in a similar fashion to our first goal. This time Jason's pass was helped across goal by Chris for Keith to apply the finishing touch. At this stage we looked the likely winners and Kirk did well to turn aside a cross shot by Keith after Ricky Pither had pulled the ball back into his path. Buckingham almost equalised when a precision free kick by Dave Barrett over our defensive wall was volleyed onto the top of our crossbar by Wayne Spencer. Shortly after a long clearance by Kirk was flicked on by Max-Grant into the path of Smith but Simon bravely blocked Smith's close range effort. With eleven minutes remaining, Buckingham equalised when Jamie O'Grady placed Smith into space down the inside right channel and Smith's cross shot went under Simon's body into our net. Buckingham were now dominating the play and they grabbed the winner with just six minutes remaining, when another free kick, this time by Marcus Sawyer, found Ian Trott free on the far post and Max-Grant had a simple task to score from close range as Trott squared the ball across the face of of our goal.

BURNHAM(2) v HANWELL TOWN(1)

BRITISH GAS BUSINESS SOUTHERN LEAGUE
SATURDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2006

Our tough baptism to the Southern League continued at Burnham with our fourth consecutive defeat. After our mid week efforts in the FA Cup replay at Buckingham Town, our side showed two changes with new signing John Boswell lining up in the centre of the defence alongside Dean whilst Sean James, making a welcome return after his holiday, was at left back with Sean Hillier switching into mid-field to the exclusion of Daley Joseph. From the outset we were forced back onto the defensive and had it not been for Simon Pratt, the game would have been over as a contest within the first fifteen minutes. Simon twice saved brilliantly from Terry Davis before denying Ben Swift with his feet and Andrew Lunn then headed wide when well placed. Having survived this early onslaught, we began to get into the game and from a cross by Chris Mills, Keith saw his header hit the top of the crossbar and go over with Jamie Jackson in the Burnham goal beaten. Burnham took a deserved lead in the twentieth minute and in similar fashion to the fate that we suffered against Buckingham Town, the goal came from a breakaway after we were attacking. Chris's free kick hit their defensive wall, the ball was cleared upfield and Davis squared the ball into the path of Swift who gave Simon no chance from close range. A good move between Keith and Ricky Pither saw Jackson make a good save from Keith's shot and from the resultant corner taken by Chris, Jackson was beaten but the ball was headed clear from the goal line. This was Chris's last contribution to the game as a heavy tackle from behind resulted in his having to leave the field to be replaced by Victor Osobu.Five minutes from the interval, Simon again kept us in the game as he saved from Davis with Sean Hillier clearing the loose ball from under our cross bar. Sean then almost equalised after a terrific individual effort which saw him go past four defenders before seeing his cross shot dip just over the bar with Jackson stranded. At the interval, Daley Joseph replaced the tiring Brown and three minutes into the half we were level. Ricky charged down an intended clearance, played a one-two with Victor and then squared the ball into the path of Keith who scored for the fourth game running. However, our lead was short lived  as Simon blocked a Davis free kick and Lunn was the quickest to react as he turned home the loose ball. We replaced Ricky with Adam Jaso and the move almost paid immediate dividends, Adam's flick seemingly being blocked by a defender's hand but our penalty claims were rejected and with it went our last chance of salvaging something from the game. Side: Simon Pratt, Antony Rowlands, Sean James, Dean Harper, John Boswell, Gary Brown, Sean Hillier, Keith Rowlands, Ricky Pither and Lee McManus. Subs: Victor Osobu for Mills (30),
Daley Joseph for Brown(45) and Adam Jaso for Pither (73)
