Hanwell Town 5 London Colney 2

Our Under 18 Youth side made an excellent start to their first season in the Allied Counties Youth League with a hard earnt 5-2 victory over London Colney.

Town made an excellent start to the game and took the lead in the eighth minute when an inswinging free kick by Phillip Cannon was headed home by Victor Osobu.

Two minutes later Town increased their lead when a good ball by Adam Jarche down the right found Victor Osobu who rode a strong challenge before pulling the ball back into the path of Chris Johnson who found the bottom corner of the Colney net from close range. A last ditch tackle then prevented Okunola from getting in a shot from close range and it was totally against the run of play in the early stages when Colney pulled a goal back in the thirteenth minute. Poor marking in the centre of Town's defence enabled Danny Fitzgerald to beat Simeon Charles with a header from close range after a long cross by Richie Elbourn. This goal proved to be just the fillip that Colney needed and they got right back into the game and might well have equalised when a long ball down the left found Ashley Aimakhu in the clear. As Simeon raced out of his goal, Aimakhu steered the ball past him but thankfully for Town, Ashley Herbert got back to clear the ball from the goal line. At the other end a good pass by Ashley O'Hallorhan gave Jarche a shooting chance, but Alistair Hill in the Colney goal turned Adam's shot over the bar.

The opinion at the interval was that it was any body's game but within a couple of minutes of the restart, a tremendous individual effort by Osobu had reclaimed Town's two goal advantage and from then on it seemed very likely that there would only be one winner. However, the one criticism that could be levelled at the side was their over elaboration on the ball and time and again the ball was lost when a simple pass to a colleague was a much better option.

Such was the case when Colney pulled a goal back with ten minutes remaining. The ball was given away to Aimakhu who evaded two tackles before firing in a speculative effort which Simeon misjudged and the ball was in the back of Town's net. With five minutes remaining, Town substitute Abdi Saad broke clear down the right but tried to score from a very tight angle when both Okunola and Osobu were better placed. With five minutes left, Town made the game safe when a fine pass by Adam sent Victor through to round Hill before steering the ball into the vacant net. On the stroke of full time, Town's man of the match Harminder Liddar rifled a shot home from the edge of the box to complete a very satisfactory evening for the home side.

(3 - 2 on Pens)

Our Allied Counties League side maintained their 100% record and in doing so reached the second round of the League Cup after a penalty shoot out with South Division side Camberley Town. Town's management team used the game to give an outing to  a number of the squad's fringe players and this was reflected in the overall performance which was often very disjointed.

Camberley began the game at a fast pace and completely dominated the opening ten minutes but it was Town who took the lead when the referee adjudged that the Camberley keeper Alex Bell had pushed a Town forward as they jostled for places awaiting a free kick into the box and a penalty kick was awarded.  Abdi Saed impudently chipped the ball into the corner of the net. Camberley scored a deserved equaliser  when Ashley Herbert ignoring Simeon Charles's late shout for the ball, deflected the ball over the keeper's head into our empty net. On the stroke of half time, Simeon made an excellent double save to ensure that we went in with the scores level. In a similar fashion to the first half, Camberley had most of the play in the opening period of the second half and our goal led a charmed life, with Liam Moth, David Hancock and Dean Frampton all missing clear chances to put the visitors in the lead. However, Town's good fortune did not last and Camberley took the lead just seconds after Herbert had been replaced by Phil Cannon.

As Town tried to re-organise their back four, a long clearance caused confusion and Frampton headed the ball over the onrushing Charles into our net. We then wasted a great chance to equalise when an excellent move down the left involving Cannon and Saed set up Okunola with only the keeper to beat but Town's centre forward tamely chipped the ball wide of the post. We made further substitutions with Faisal Mahad and Vinney Sharma coming on and these two almost created the equaliser but Sharma volleyed Mahad's cross over the bar. As the minutes ticked away and with our lightweight attack making little impression on the Camberley defence it seemed that Camberley would hold onto their narrow lead but in the final minutes, Courtney McLaren got his head to a chipped free kick by Gary Hart and the ball went across Bell into the far corner to take the game into extra time. Five minutes into the first period we were ahead as Bell failed to hold Sharma's low shot and in the melee that followed, Sharma managed to chip the ball into the roof of the Camberley net.

With eight minutes remaining in the second period, Camberley equalised from the penalty spot through Frampton after the referee had spotted a hand ball by one of our defenders to take the game into the penalty shoot out. Cannon and McLaren confidently scored for us before both Okunola and Sharma mised.Camberley also missed two before Saed scored for us and when Camberley's Rob Clark ballooned their fifth penalty over the bar, the game was ours.

Under 18
Wembley  0 Hanwell Town 1

Hanwell Under 18 side continued their unbeaten start to the season in a disciplined match on a wet Wednesday in Wembley. Hanwell settled early, on a fast greasy pitch and soon created chances with shots from Osobu, Johnson and two from Liddar, all failing to find the net. A free kick from Liddar forced a save from the Wembley keeper. Unfortunately the  early promise of goals was not delivered and as the half wore on Wembley came to look more dangerous on the break with Hanwell's positional play needing to improve in one or two positions. The weather conditions hampered play and Hanwell tended to over elaborate on the ball, a fault the team must address and learn from.

A change at half time saw Captain Ashley Herbert replaced by Nii Nortey who made a confident start against  a rejuvenated Wembley who began to take the game to Hanwell. A defensive slip up by O'Hallorhan nearly saw a Wembley goal but he recovered with the help of the post to clear the ball away. Mahad and Stanton on the left produced some fine attacking  crosses but the Hanwell forwards could not capitalise and it was Wembley who were left free to counter attack. The reorganised defence changed again as Hart replaced Mahmoudi, and the Hanwell bench were made aware of a knock to O'Hallorhan.

It seemed a stroke of fortune, after so many missed chances in the first half, when the ball ricocheted off a Wembley midfield player into the path of Chris Johnson who cleverly played in Victor Osobu to score his 5th goal of the campaign.

Shortly afterward O'Hallorahan was replaced with Fazli. Liddar dropped to the back four and Hanwell were left to see out the game with a back four in its third permutation. In defence only Stanton remained in his position for the 90 minutes. It says much for this side that despite the changes, they kept their discipline to record a victory that was probably better than the scoreline suggests. If all the first half chances had been converted it could have been six but thanks to Osobu the record will show Wembley 0 Hanwell 1

London Colney 0 Hanwell Town 1

The U18 Allied Counties Youth side took  their unbeaten start to the season into November with probably their least convincing performance away to bottom team London Colney. A combination of injuries and illness resulted in captain for the night Harry Liddar starting at centreback alongside O'Hallorahan with debuts in Town colours in the midfield for Tamer Ondar and Luke Skeete. Hanwell were something of a reshuffled pack.

On a bitterly cold night the game started briskly enough with both sides keen to move the ball. Hanwell took the game to the opposition and began to gain ground down both flanks with Mclaren and Jarche. However, all to often the move would fizzle to nothing or if a cross did come in it would fail to penetrate the retreating defence line.

The first meaningful shot on target from full back Gary Hart was too far out to trouble the keeper. A better opportunity fell to Mclaren after a move down the right left Jarche free to cross the ball,  played square to Mclaren he sliced his shot in comical fashion. Fortunately, moments later he regained his composure, after some sustained pressure,  to place the ball in the net to give Town a deserved lead. The only other notable incident of the half was a tame effort from Onder in the midfield.

Most of the second half followed a similar pattern with Town gaining advantage wide but their efforts failing to be converted by Johnson and Osobu who for the first time this season were misfiring. London Colney for their part built on their one free kick effort of the first half to pose a far more potent threat the longer the game continued. They began to win the midfield battle and what had been the odd breakaway chance became wave upon wave of attacking menace. Liddar and O'Hallorhan came under intense pressure and with time running out Charles in goal became much more the participant than spectator in the game. With minutes to go a mishit clearance headed goalwards forcing Charles to stick out a hand to force it onto a post. This would have been a deserved equaliser for Colney's second half efforts. Not for the first time this campaign  Hanwell weathered the storm to hang on for all three points.
