BEACONSFIELD SYCOB (3) v HANWELL TOWN (1)
SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2007
BRITISH GAS BUSINESS SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Against Beaconsfield Sycob, in a game that was crucial to both sides we produced our most disappointing performance of the season in a very moderate game, that was further marred by the head injury suffered by Beaconsfield's Roy Gumbs early in the second half. The injury  caused when Gumbs collided with the concrete wall around the perimeter of the pitch, resulted in the game being delayed for twenty three minutes and a trip to hospital for Beaconsfield's evergreen striker. Fortunately, the injury was not as serious as first feared and he is likely to be in action again in a couple of weeks. In the game itself, it was a reflection of the turmoil that has existed in both clubs that there were only eleven players on view who had featured in the two squads when the teams met just seven weeks ago. Our side included débutantes Adilson Lopes and Danny Edwards, both on loan from Hendon and it was Edwards who made the first impression on the game when he opened the scoring for us in the seventeenth minute. A free kick by Antony Rowlands was deflected out to Mark Sroka on our left flank and from Mark's resultant cross, the ball ran loose to Edwards who made no mistake. Unfortunately our lead was short lived as just four minutes later, from a cross on the right by Nicholas Walters, the Beaconsfield skipper Daniel Willment evaded Mark Stevens's challenge in the box before steering the ball across John Armand into the far corner.  Both sides had chances to take the lead before the interval, Edwards chipping the ball just over the bar for us and then on the stroke of half time, Naz Richardson's header from another Antony free kick drifted just wide of the far post with Brett Steers in the home goal beaten. At the other end, both Walters and Oliver Howells should have done better with good opportunities. We were forced to make a change at the interval, Warren Clarke replacing Antony at right back before the enforced stoppage just five minutes into the half. Fifteen minutes after the resumption, Beaconsfield took the lead when Gumbs's replacement, Anthony Wright, outpaced Mark as a long ball was hoisted forward and he lifted the ball over John into our net as he advanced from his goal. Our fate was sealed nine minutes from time when a good interchange of passes between Howells and Oliver Godwin resulted in the latter driving the ball home. Such was the paucity of our second half display that it was only in the final minute that Brett Steers in the Beaconsfield goal was asked to make a save.
